Scouting for Food Recap

Thank you to all the Scouts and Scouters who participated in Scouting for Food this year and helped to make it such an awesome success! Our Narcoossee District units collected more than 77,000 pounds of food from our generous communities!

Orange County collections went to Second Harvest Food Bank. In Osceola County, scouting units partnered with the school district and other local volunteers to use food donations in Thanksgiving baskets for Osceola families. Learn more in this article from the Osceola News Gazette and this report from Spectrum News 13.

Heartfelt thanks to our Narcoossee District SFF chair Sonia Tzabery, and the SFF leads in Osceola County—Art Polnasek and Greg Filak. If you haven’t already, please be sure to record your unit’s service hours for SFF and other service in Scoutbook (instructions here).

Narcoossee Cub Family Campout

The Narcoossee Cub Scout Family Campout was a huge success! Eight units from District attended and took part in the festivities. The Cubs enjoyed rain gutter regatta races, Orienteering course, hiking, fishing, crafts, and dessert contest. The night was capped off with an amazing campfire and flag retirement ceremony. A huge thank you to Troop 192 for support during the campout. They built a monkey bridge, hosted fireman chit and totin chit classes for AOLs, put on an amazing flag retirement ceremony during campfire, and shared their gear. Thank you also to the lead event organizer Josh Lueck for providing an amazing experience for our cubs.

Popcorn 2025 in Review

Popcorn 2025 has come to a close. Narcoossee District had an excellent season this year, with 25 units selling and $180,387 in sales.  So many Scouting adventures will be powered by popcorn! Thirty-two Scouts earned their way into the top sellers party. Pack 125 finished strong in 1st place for the units and and Benjamin A in 1st place for the Scouts! And last but certainly not least, BIG thanks to Jillian Davis for serving as the Narcoossee District Popcorn Kernel!

Individual Membership & Unit Renewals

This is the second year the process for individual membership renewals is separated from the process for unit renewal (annual unit recharter). Under the current renewal process, individual youth and adult BSA memberships are set on a 12 month term with renewal each year in the month of initial join. Most legacy scouts and Scouters who have been registered with BSA for more than two years will have their membership renewal come due in December (now!).

Youth & Adult Individual Membership Renewals: Unit rosters in My.Scouting.org list the membership expiration date for each youth and adult in the unit. Unit leadership can assist unit youth and adults with knowing WHEN their membership is due for renewal and how to go about renewing their individu al memberships. National BSA has created resources with step-by-step instructions for (1) Units renewing their members, (2) Parent renewing their youth’s membership, and (3) Adults renewing their own membership

Unit Renewals: It is time for Key 3 Leaders of Packs, Troops, Crews, and Ships to complete unit renewals (process formerly called annual recharter). Here are step-by-step instructions provided by Scouting America and also a helpful instructional created by our DE George Gagel that includes some FAQs.

Training Spotlight:
Safeguarding Youth & Hazardous Weather

Safeguarding Youth training is Scouting America’s updated youth protection training (replaces YPT) and a joining requirement for new Scouters. Existing adult leaders must complete the Safeguarding Youth training before their YPT training expires. If a volunteer’s Safeguarding Youth training (or legacy YPT) is not current at the time of annual unit renewal, the volunteer will not be re-registered. Safeguarding Youth training is available online through My.Scouting.org and is valid for one year.

Hazardous Weather training is mandatory training for all contact leaders (i.e., Cubmaster and Assistants, Den Leaders and Assistants, Scoutmasters and Assistants, Crew Advisor) and recommended for all adults who attend outdoor events with scouts. Hazardous Weather training is available online through My.Scouting.org and is valid for two years.

Seeking Derby Track & Event Lead
for District Pinewood Derby

Narcoossee District would like to host a District-level Pinewood Derby in the Spring. A District Derby gives our cub scouts an extra opportunity to race the cars they have worked so hard to design. And in past years, older scouts and adults have been allowed to race too! Please consider if you or your unit can help with one or both of the following needs:

Loan a Pinewood Derby track with at least 4 lanes
Serve as the event lead or host pack

The tentative date on the district calendar is March 1st. But that date can be adjusted, if needed, to make the event happen. The district has a good template for this event from previous years, so a person or unit leading will not need to start from scratch.

If you or your unit can help, please contact our District Chair Kathy Vickroy via email or call or text. [email protected] or (412) 758-9636.

Passionate About Campout Safety?
Serve as a Short-Term Camping Administrator!

Narcoossee District is seeking multiple volunteers to be trained to serve as Short-Term Camping Administrators for our district events. A person in this role is responsible for ensuring that the planned camping event complies with the NCAP Short-term Camp Standards and BSA National Camp Standards. (They are NOT responsible for planning the event.)

To learn more about this role and the upcoming trainings, please contact our district chair Kathy Vickroy at 412-758-9636 or [email protected].

Narcoossee District Annual Business Meeting
& Thank You Reception

Narcoossee District invites all district members to attend the Annual Business Meeting & Thank You Reception on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at 6:00pm. This event will be held in the hour before Round Table at Center Pointe Community Church (9580 Curry Ford Road, Orlando, FL). At this meeting the voting members (CORs and District Members at Large) will vote on the 2026 slate of candidates for the Narcoossee District committee.

If you will attend, please RSVP to our District Chair Kathy Vickroy via email or call or text. [email protected] or (412) 758-9636.

Note: To provide a fair and orderly nominating process, nominations will not be accepted from the floor at the time of election. Scouting America has procedures in place that permits sufficient time to consider in advance all aspects of a nominee’s suitability to serve. If you have a prospective Scouter or individual please share with Kathy Vickroy.

Narcoossee District Roundtable
Next Roundtable: Thursday, December 11, 2025 at 7:00pm

We would like to invite you to the Narcoossee District Roundtable, which is typically be held on the third Thursday of every month at Center Point Community Church (9580 Curry Ford Road, Orlando, FL 32825). Doors open for gathering at 6:30pm, and opening flag is at 7pm. Roundtable is a great way for Scout leaders to share ideas, network and get information about our Council and District. Ideally, every unit should try to have at least one leader attend every month so that you can take what you learn to your Units!

This month’s December Roundtable will be held on the SECOND Thursday of December, Thursday 12/11/25, so it has a bit more separation from the school holiday break. Program breakout groups will be offered for Cub Scout leaders and Scouts BSA/Venturing leaders.

If you have any announcements or messages you would like to present or convey at Roundtable, please contact Ruth Currey at [email protected].

Your Training Update! Get Trained Today!

Please pass the word to all parents and volunteers that our scouts deserve trained leaders. As unit leaders, imagine a pack, troop, crew, or ship with 100% trained leaders!

Online Training Opportunities. Here is how to get caught up with online training
• Take the online course for your registered position via https://my.scouting.org/. Remember that if you change positions, you need to register for the new role and take the training for that role to be considered “TRAINED.” Visit my.scouting.org for all your online training needs!
• Every leader must be current with the new Safeguarding Youth training or the legacy Youth Protection training. Don’t let it expire!

In-Person Training Opportunities. Trainings offered via online courses are also sometimes offered as in-person trainings. There are other courses (e.g., BALOO, IOLS, etc.) that are ONLY offered in-person. You may attend trainings hosted by Narcoossee District or any of the other Districts in the Central Florida Council. Training opportunities within Central Florida Council available in the next few months are listed below. Visit the Council Training Calendar to see all the training opportunities available within our Council. When you visit the calendar website, click ‘Apply Filter’ and check the box for ‘Training’.

BALOO and IOLS Training Opportunities

Advancement Reminders for Life Scouts

Stan Richards, Dan Morrison, and Theresa Martinez are leading the Narcoossee District Eagle Advancement Team. You can submit proposals and general Eagle advancement inquiries to [email protected].

Please note the following information for Life scouts working on their Eagle Rank:

1. The Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook was last updated in February 2023. Please make sure you are using the 2023A version when you submit your workbook for district review. The 2023A version of the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook PDF can be downloaded from the National website at:
https://www.scouting.org/programs/scouts-bsa/advancement-and-awards/eagle-scout-workbook/

2. Within the Project Proposal, the District Information requested on Page B should be entered as: Narcoossee Eagle Chair; (407) 889-4403; 1951 S Orange Blossom Trail, Apopka, FL 32703; [email protected]

3. Life scouts who are ready for their Eagle Project Workbook review and District approvals have the option of personally meeting with a District Advancement team member by appointment. The Life Scout can still opt to submit and receive feedback electronically, if preferred. But in some cases, a short in-person meeting will still be needed for signatures. Electronic proposal submissions should be sent to [email protected]

4. Dr. Phillips Charities has established a matching grant fund at the Central Florida Council to which Eagle Scout candidates may apply for partial assistance to fund their Eagle Scout Service project. Only projects located in Orange, Osceola & Seminole counties will be considered for approval. For more information and application: https://www.cflscouting.org/dr-phillips-charities-eagle-service-project-grant-application/

5. The Council has a new online tool for Eagle Rank Applications, which eliminates the need to mail paperwork until after the BOR is completed and provides support for completing the application and real-time tracking of status.  The tool and instructions for use are available at http://eagleapp.cflscouting.org/

6. To schedule an Eagle Board of Review (EBOR) with the district, a unit representative or the Eagle Candidate should send a request to the district advancement team at [email protected]. The request should identify possible available dates for the EBOR, and if known, provide a location and preferred time. A Scout may make this request, but must have coordinated with and cc their Unit Advancement Chair when doing so. When requesting, please allow for enough time to obtain reference letters, and provide multiple dates to aid in ease of scheduling.

Merit Badge Counselor Memo

Michelle Adamick is the Narcoossee District Merit Badge/Nova/SuperNova Coordinator. Here are links to two flyers designed to help scouts with the merit badge process:

Flyer #1: How to Earn a Merit Badge – Step by Step
For scouts, parents/guardians, scouting leaders, and advancement chairs — this guide walks you through the merit badge process step-by-step so you’ll know exactly what to expect. Click here for downloadable PDF.

Flyer #2: Finding a Merit Badge Counselor Made Easy!
For unit leaders and advancement chairs — this resource explains how to find a merit badge counselor for a Scout when you don’t already have one available. Click here for downloadable PDF.

All requests to become a Merit Badge Counselor or Nova/SuperNova mentor should be submitted to Michelle at [email protected]If you are unsure of the status of your application to become a Merit Badge Counselor or a Nova/SuperNova Mentor, please review the Merit Badge Counselor application tracker  HERE. On the application tracker, if something is red, then it is missing and needs to be submitted before the application will be processed. Note that a common issue is that persons applying to become a MBC do not submit the required new adult application. Even though most MBC have already submitted an adult application to be a leader with a unit, a NEW adult leader application is required to become a MBC because MBC is a new position that is registered as a district (not unit) position. Questions can be sent to Michelle at the email above or call/text Michelle at 972-358-6171.
